Some of you reading this may not have been alive, but I distinctly remember it. I must have been in school because I recall adults excitedly herding us kids into a gymnasium where an old CRT  was set up with a live broadcast of the shuttle launch. We all stared in awe as the Space Shuttle Challenger took off, higher and higher, soaring into the sky.

And then, it happened.

It exploded.

No one knew what to do.

The broadcasters were speechless. NASA reported a "major malfunction."

And I, like most of us who saw it happen live, have the image of it forever burned into my memory.

An image of the smoke trail and explosion.
It exploded 73 seconds into the flight, killing all seven crew members aboard.
